Massage

Massage is one of the most ancient healing arts in the world. You don’t have to have a specific physical problem to have a massage; it is not only beneficial for tired or tense muscles, but also for one’s general state of mind. A massage can be tailored to a person’s specific needs, taking into account their general health and well being, as well as any specific injuries or problems.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy massage uses essential oils to support physical and mental wellbeing.

Essential oils are highly concentrated essences of a plant or tree. An essential oil is generally distilled from the leaves, stem, flowers root or bark of a plant. They are the true essence of the plant and they offer therapeutic benefits.

The essential oils, combined with massage can help with stress, anxiety, sleep, aches and pains, mental and physical fatigue, feeling low in energy and mood.

Vanessa Afful

Vanessa Afful has been a qualified Aromatherapist since 2012 and has been making natural products for many years. A member of the IFA (International Federation of Aromatherapists), her Aromatherapy work includes massage as well as natural beauty products designed to use at home in between treatments.

Essential oils and natural products are at the heart of her practice; her aim is to show you the benefits of Massage and Aromatherapy.  Often these therapies are viewed as a special treat or a luxury, but there are many benefits from having a regular massage or using essential oils. They really can support your wellness journey and make you feel your best.  With Vanessa’s help you can build your own self-care tool kit that will assist you throughout your life, whether you are going through a stressful time or just want to improve your overall wellness.

An Aromatherapy appointment with Vanessa includes a consultation where she will discuss your needs and recommend a blend of oils that will be used in your treatment.  Essential oils have a plethora of therapeutic benefits.  In conjunction with massage, they can be useful for both physical and emotional conditions, from relieving muscular pain to reducing stress and anxiety. It is also a great way of reducing toxins in the body and improving the tone and the elasticity of skin.

Vanessa’s approach is “There are no quick fixes, self-care this is a lifelong journey.  As with all lifelong commitments, we all fall off the wagon, but if we can incorporate small realistic changes over a period of time, we’re more likely to stick with them.  Especially when we notice the positive effects they have on our health and wellbeing.”

Prices:

Initial Consultation £80 (includes 20 minute online call and 60 minutes treatment)

Follow up sessions £70 (60 minutes)

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage (DTM) focuses on the realignment of the underlying layers of muscles and deep connective tissues. The massage technique is slower but with a firm pressure, concentrating on specific areas of tension or pain, and includes using soft fists, forearms and elbows.
This can help to relieve specific areas of muscular tension and discomfort. Amongst other holistic health benefits, it particularly improves mobility, increases range of motion and loosens tight muscle tissue. By improving blood circulation and increasing drainage to these areas, it can allow the release of toxins and bring nutrients to the affected tissues.

Deborah Warden

debs3Deborah is a fully qualified ITEC massage therapist and holds additional certificates in Pregnancy, Swedish and Deep Tissue massage. She aims to use her experience and combined skills to create a relaxing and nurturing environment for your body and mind to heal and revitalize.

As an experienced massage therapist she finds great reward in helping a wide variety people overcome illness and reach a vibrant level of health.  Deborah’s style combines general massage techniques with deep tissue work, some stretching, muscular stimulation and connective tissue release to help the patient regain and retain the health of the body’s soft tissue. Its therapeutic effect can often eradicate the need for symptom-masking painkillers and restore movement and functionality.

As a qualified Acupuncturist she has additional knowledge of the bodies meridian system and key points on the channels for achieving a deeper level of release from tension in the body.  She also embodies the Chinese philosophy that the mind and body are intrinsically linked so there is often an emotional root to the physical symptoms the patient experiences.

Massage & Acupuncture combo

This combination is particularly good for sufferers of back or shoulder pain, or for individuals suffering with ingrained muscular issues anywhere in the body.  It is also a very good combination to combat migraines or assist those suffering with anxiety or emotional turbulence. Within the treatment, moxa (dried mugwort) which is a Chinese herb may be used.  The moxa is applied to the end of acupuncture needles or used in a stick and is burnt to send heat into the body to further relieve symptoms.  It may also be necessary for the client to receive Chinese cupping which also directs localised heat to the affected region.

Deborah is a fully qualified and experienced Acupuncturist and massage therapist who finds great reward in helping people overcome illness and reach a vibrant level of health.  She has worked with numerous women on their journey from assisting with conception, to providing support throughout the pregnancy and then following the birth.

Deborah is an ITEC massage therapist and holds additional certificates in Pregnancy, Swedish and Deep Tissue massage.  She aims to use her experience and combined skills to create a relaxing and nurturing environment for your body and mind to heal and revitalize. By focusing on the individual and using a range of techniques specifically developed for treating pregnancy related conditions, women report that they feel more energized, sleep better and have relief from pain following the massage.

Following the birth of the baby a post-partum massage is tailored to help restore your body to its pre-partum condition. It addresses the stress of carrying and caring for a newborn. It can help speed recovery by bringing relief of sore muscles and help you to relax more easily.

Deborah has been fortunate to have trained with leading practitioners and trainers in their fields (including Debra Betts for fertility and pregnancy related matters) which has helped to refine her intuitive sense for locating restrictions in the body where, often, there is an emotional aspect attached.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a Japanese, holistic massage therapy well known for its relaxing and tonifying effect on the body. Although it literally means pressure with fingers, it incorporates a wide variety of techniques such as deep pressures, stretches, rotations etc. Each treatment is tailored to the specific needs of the recipient, who is typically fully dressed with comfortable clothes.

A profound Shiatsu treatment is a well-balanced synergy of three basic elements; skill, knowledge and intuition. A descent practitioner should have a good knowledge of Oriental medicine but also of anatomy, physiology and pathology as described by the conventional medicine. That would contribute to a more accurate diagnosis and more appropriate treatment plan. The aim of a treatment is nothing else but to resonate with the body’s healing power, typically known as homeostasis. Once this is achieved, healing occurs as a self-correction mechanism. How well this is achieved is determined by the state of one’s health.

Shiatsu can help relieve various symptoms such as stress, headaches, migraines, anxiety, digestive disorders, constipation, musculoskeletal problems, menstrual irregularities, etc.

Nik Trigkatzis

Following a short career in Telecoms, Nik felt the need to change his path and work closer to people. Through his practice in Tai chi, Nik appreciated the need of love and compassion as the key for a happy life and ultimately a means to healing. The compassionate touch of shiatsu within the framework of oriental and western medicine felt the right vocation for him. He completed an intensive 3 and a half years diploma in Shiatsu at the Greek branch of European Shiatsu School. Nik’s approach is to listen and then adjust the treatment to the specific needs of the recipient. His goal is to provide his clients with relief and support and to help them embrace themselves as much as possible.

Sound Massage

Sound massage is based on ancient knowledge concerning the effect of sounds that was applied in Indian healing therapy as long as more than 5000 years ago. According to Eastern ideas man was created out of sound, i.e. he is sound. If a human being is “in tune” with himself and his environment, then he or she is able to arrange his/her life freely and creatively.

The specialist singing bowls used in the session were designed and developed by the Peter Hess Institute, specifically as healing tools. Each bowl is precisely tuned to vibrate at the exact frequency corresponding to the natural frequency of a healthy bodily organ. Through resonance, this literally tunes, harmonises and restores the body’s natural, healthy state of being. This meditative treatment makes each cell of our body vibrate and the whole system remember, how to be well! It gives the mind and the spirit opportunity to travel to find healing, wisdom, ideas, answers, bliss, connection, beauty and to meet our higher self.

The most important effects of Sound Massage:

• Fast achievement of deep relaxation, since the sounds appeal to a person’s original trust.
• Gentle massage and harmonization of each individual body cell through sound.
• Relief of tensions and blockages in the body and mind.
• The client experiences his body to be pleasantly light and vibrating freely.
• Reinforcement of self-healing forces.
• Positive influence on self-confidence, creativity and productive energy,
attainment of renewed joie de vivre.
• Letting go of old patterns – a new order can evolve.
• Spiritual exploration and revival.

Sports and Remedial Massage

Sports and remedial massage is a deeper massage which aims to help athletes prepare and recover better from hard exercise or competition. It also incorporates more advanced techniques to help improve the recovery of common sports related injuries.

Pre-event: In the final build-up to a competition this requires good thorough massage which will identify and treat any areas of adverse tension.

Post- event: The main focus is recovery and massage should be given as soon as possible using gentle flowing techniques.

Many non-sports people also enjoy this deeper massage because it can help relieve minor aches and pains.

My shoulders were a bit achy at first as the massage was so deep, but it has worked to release long standing knots and I can feel much of the tightness has gone. My legs feel looser too.  I will be back!”

Thai Yoga Massage

Thai yoga massage (TYM) is an ancient healing art from the Buddhist tradition. It is a clever combination of targeted acupressure; finding and dissolving knots and blockages, stimulating energy lines, toning the muscles and tendons and opening the joints with gentle Hatha yoga-like stretches. The aim of TYM is to restore balance to the body’s energy system and harness the process of self-healing and renewal.

Thai yoga massage is not just a physical therapy but has a spiritual healing dimension. By encouraging deep relaxation, it restores the mind and body to harmonious balance and peace.

Thai Yoga Massage encourages us to slow down and settle into our bodies. It can –
* improve flexibility
* dissolve aches and pain
* increase energy levels
* correct posture and alignment
* stimulate blood flow and circulation
* aid breathing and relaxation
* promote sleep
* restore well-being

What happens in a massage session?

Using thumbs, hands, feet, elbows, forearms and knees, the practitioner releases tension and dissolves blockages that lead to pain, dysfunction and disease. Thai Yoga Massage is done fully clothed, wearing loose garments. The massage takes place on a firm massage futon on the floor. Traditionally there is no use of oils.

TYM is like having a yoga class done to you. The massage is playful and fun as well as relaxing. It can be adapted and tailored to your individual body’s range and needs. It is safe and can be used on every kind of patient, regardless of age and flexibility.

Dorothy_Lawrence_9269_colour_10x8_FINAL-2Dorothy Lawrence is a Thai Yoga Massage practitioner. She trained at the School of Thai Yoga Massage under the inspired teaching of Kira Balaskas. She is qualified at an Advanced Level and her training is recognized by the ICNM. She has also studying under international teacher, Bob Haddad from Chang Mai and founder of Thai Healing Alliance International (THAI) and Zotan in Dynamic or Osteo Thai Massage.

Working with the body has always been a vital part of Dorothy’s life. In her late teens she trained as a performer at the Drama Centre, London under the renowned movement director, the late Yat Malmgram. A former ballet dancer, Yat developed the now widely esteemed movement system known as Laban Movement Psychology.

Dorothy took up Yoga in 2000 after developing fibromyalgia and has used its significant restorative powers to return her body to health and well-being. In 2010 she decided to take a Yoga teacher training course at the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Ashram in New York State, where she was taught by Swami Sadasivananda and Srivasan. She was introduced to Thai Yoga Massage through Ralf Marzen and a visit to Thailand. She immediately recognized its creative healing potential and decided to train as a practitioner.

Dorothy fuses traditional Thai Massage techniques with Dynamic Thai Massage or Osteothai, called “The Secret Dance”in some circles. Osteothai is a beautiful rhythmic form of working, introducing some effective techniques borrowed from Osteopathy, such as body harmonics, rhythm and recoil. It opens a new way of understanding and working with the body. This fusion of Western and Eastern approaches has made Thai Massage more creative and usable.
in addition Dynamic or Osteo Thai Massage can –
help the patient to let go when the patient cannot relax his or her body.
Increase joint mobility
Release spasm or contracted muscles
Improve the mobility of the spine and the synovial liquid in the joints
